need advice

Surgery is next week!  That snuck up quick. April 12th has been looming somewhere in the future and now its practically here.

The question I have for you fellow bloggers that have had surgery already and are recovering is;  How long did you need someone to take care of you?

My mom who works from home and lives far away (far enough a plane ticket is necessary) is coming to Boston to help support me through the recovery process.  I know at first I'm really going to need someone to help me take meds and eat and be in the hospital with me.  I'm guessing I'd need her to be here at least until the first post-op appointment?  It is scheduled for 6 days after.  That is already 10 days away from work for her.  As of now she's got her ticket here but no return ticket so I'm trying to think ahead to when she can get back home.

Any advice? suggestions?

  1. Hey Laura! It is great that your mom is able to come help you. My parents stayed home with me for 5 days, switching off who was taking off work and after that some friends would come and keep me company. I would say that it is probably okay to have just the 6 days but it might be nice to have some friends visit every once in a while. I was able to do okay on my own. The hardest part for me was getting up to make food for myself, so maybe you could prepare a bunch meals and just have them to heat up later?

    1. Oh and I know you have much bigger things to worry about.. But since you are in dental school and all. I am thinking about applying to dental school next year and I was wondering if you had any fantastic advice about applying and the schooling in general and how you like the whole deal?

  2. I don't think you need someone in the hospital with you. That's what the nurses and aids are for. You'll be sleeping most of the time and probably get discharged the next day. I didn't have anyone stay overnight with me anyhow. I figured there was no sense making someone sleep in an uncomfortable cot and barely get any rest. But that's just my take on it.

6 days post op should be enough if you're tough. If not, you may want a few friends to stop in here and there to help with cooking and laundry.

    Best of luck!

  3. I think that one week would give you time to get into a routine and organize things for when she goes but you may think you need more. I only had BSSO so was more indep sooner. Go with your gut, it will all work out :) Good luck!

  5. I would say at least until your first post op (mine next friday). I know in my experience, I am still very weak right now, and feeding myself has been challenging. I didn't expect to feel this way, I thought I would be stronger, but it is still hard for me to walk up and down the stairs. Who knows, maybe in the next couple of days I will feel better, but I just had a rough start...so maybe that's why I recommend 10 days :)

Good luck! Surgery is almost here!!
